Diffusion Tube Monitoring
Do you require Diffusion Tube Monitoring in support of a planning application or to address the requirements of a condition? If so, we can help achieve compliance. Take a look through our specialist Diffusion Tube Monitoring services to find out more.
Why undertake Diffusion Tube Monitoring?
Redmore Environmental can offer a range of diffusion tube monitoring services. The results can be used to quantify pollution levels in support of planning applications, or to provide suitable data for baseline studies at a specific site.
Diffusion tubes are a low-cost monitoring option and provide a time weighted average of pollutant concentrations over the exposure period. Nitrogen dioxide diffusion tube monitoring is undertaken extensively by Local Authorities, and the method is recommended in Environment Agency Technical Guidance Note (TGN) M8. They are passive samplers which can easily be deployed on a lamppost at roadside locations and are typically exposed for a month period, before being replaced and transported to a UKAS accredited laboratory for analysis.
Diffusion tubes are typically used for monitoring of:
- Nitrogen dioxide.
- Oxides of nitrogen.
- Ammonia.
- Hydrogen sulphide.
- Volatile Organic Compounds.
We can ensure the tubes are deployed in accordance with the Nitrogen Dioxide Diffusion Tube Calendar produced by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA), as well as verification and adjustment of the results is completed in line with the methodology set out in Local Air Quality Management (LAQM) Technical Guidance (22).
Diffusion Tube Monitoring Experts
Redmore Environmental has substantial experience in diffusion tube monitoring within the residential, commercial and industrial sectors. As a result, we are able to provide bespoke consultancy to address your specific needs.
The success of your project could be aided by Redmore Environmental’s 20 years of experience undertaking Diffusion Tube Monitoring throughout the UK. You will gain advice on planning applications and discharging conditions to addressing consultation responses and public comments. We have undertaken Diffusion Tube Monitoring nationwide for residential and educational schemes, as well as industrial and commercial facilities.
We have been involved in a number of exciting projects throughout the country in recent years. These include:
- York Road, London – Diffusion Tube Monitoring in support of the construction of 82 residential units across two apartment blocks. The London Borough of Wandsworth requested monitoring to be completed as there were concerns in relation to the ventilation requirements of apartments situated at first to third floor levels of a proposed residential block. Monitoring of nitrogen dioxide concentrations was undertaken over a period of 6-months and verification and adjustment of the results was completed to inform the dispersion modelling assessment.
- Wyebridge Motors, Hereford – A planning application was submitted for the demolition of the existing structures and construction of two residential apartment buildings. A consultation response received from Hereford Council requested Diffusion Tube Monitoring as the site was partially located within the Hereford Air Quality Management Area. As such, a 3-month survey was undertaken using nitrogen dioxide diffusion tubes. Verification and adjustment of the results was subsequently completed in order to quantify baseline concentrations at the site.
- Victoria Road, Birmingham – Diffusion Tube Monitoring undertaken in support of the construction of a residential development on land off Victoria Road. Birmingham City Council raised concerns in relation to potential exposure of future residents to poor air quality due to the proximity of the site to the A38M and associated vehicle exhaust emissions. As such, site specific monitoring was undertaken using passive diffusion tubes for a period of 3-months. The results were then used to further define existing conditions for future occupants of the development.
