Monitoring Monthly Round-up
As we move through another busy month, our team has been hard at work across the country delivering a range of Air Quality Monitoring services – from BREEAM Indoor Air Quality Monitoring and Bioaerosol Assessments to complex Ambient and Construction Dust Monitoring projects. Here’s a look at some of the highlights from October.
BREEAM Indoor Air Quality Monitoring
This month, we carried out post-construction Indoor Air Quality Monitoring at seven different new developments in accordance with the BREEAM New Construction 2014, 2018 and Version 6 standard requirements. The associated laboratory analysis included testing of over 35 Volatile Organic Compound and formaldehyde samples. The results will be used to help our clients understand internal air quality conditions and identify any mitigation needed to minimise pollutant levels ahead of building occupation.
The monitoring took us to a variety of interesting sites across the UK including a number of new logistics developments, a leisure centre and a food and drink manufacturing facility. Each site presented its own challenges, but also an opportunity to apply our technical expertise and experience to ensure compliance with the BREEAM Standards.
Bioaerosol Assessment
This month, we also carried out a Bioaerosol Assessment at an anaerobic digestion facility in accordance with the Environment Agency’s Technical Guidance Note M9 ‘Environmental Monitoring of Bioaerosols at Regulated Facilities’. The scope involved undertaking sampling using Institute of Occupational Medicine cassettes and filters to assess bioaerosol levels in the vicinity of the site and determine potential process contributions from operations at the facility.
The visit provided a valuable first-hand insight into the monitoring challenges associated with biological treatment processes and further strengthened our experience in Bioaerosol Assessment and anaerobic digestion operations. The results will be used to support the Operator in demonstrating compliance with the Environmental Permit for the plant.
Ambient Air Quality Monitoring
This month we have undertaken a wide range of Ambient Air Quality Monitoring services. Our long-term ambient air quality investigation in London continues to progress and has recently been extended through to October 2026. The monitoring programme is focused on assessing potential dust impacts associated with an existing waste management facility. We are employing a combination of Dust Deposition Gauges and Continuous Automatic Monitors to collect real-time data and long-term information on conditions in the vicinity of the site, as well as assess the potential for dust impacts as a result of emissions from the facility.
Elsewhere, we’re supporting the construction of a Sustainable Energy Plant in the north-west with a multi-year Ambient Monitoring programme designed to ensure compliance with the planning consent for the facility. Three Continuous Automatic Monitor units and a weather station have been installed at the site by Redmore Environmental and we are providing annual reporting of the findings for the next five years – a great example of our ability to support our clients with their long-term project requirements!
In addition, we’ve been undertaking passive Air Quality Monitoring using diffusion tubes to quantify baseline nitrogen dioxide concentrations around several locations in Stoke-on-Trent. These surveys have been conducted in line with Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs guidance and the results will be unitised to inform a number of Air Quality Assessments that we are completing for new developments in the area.
Construction Dust Monitoring
Our team continues to support a number of construction-related air quality projects this month. These programmes involve Particulate Matter Monitoring to help quantify ambient conditions and evaluate the effectiveness of the dust control measures on-site.
Recent work includes monitoring at a major hospital development near Bournemouth, where we were instructed to undertake Particulate Matter Monitoring during the earthworks phase. We have also recently completed a period of Baseline Monitoring at a new supermarket development in Sheerness. This project will shortly transition into the construction phase and we will continue to undertake monitoring to evaluate the on-site dust control measures throughout the duration of the works.
Looking Ahead
As we head into the next month, our focus will remain on delivering consistent, high-quality Air Quality Monitoring and analysis services across all areas. With several ongoing long-term projects and new enquiries coming through, we’re continuing to strengthen our role in supporting development and environmental compliance across the UK.
