Dust Investigations: Understanding Deposited Dust and Potential Loss of Amenity

Warm and dry conditions throughout the summer have brought dust into sharper focus for a number of our monitoring projects. During prolonged periods of dry weather, dust from industrial activities, vehicle movements and exposed surfaces can become more readily airborne, increasing the potential for deposition at surrounding properties and associated loss of amenity.

For August’s monitoring spotlight, we’re taking a closer look at a Dust Investigation currently being undertaken at a property in the South East, where concerns have been raised regarding potential dust impacts associated with a nearby operational facility.

Unlike monitoring undertaken solely to measure airborne particulate concentrations, a Dust Investigation can help establish objective evidence of the amount and characteristics of dust being deposited and provide further information to help investigate its potential source.

Developing the Dust Investigation

Every Dust Investigation presents different challenges, particularly where there are multiple potential sources of particulate matter within the surrounding area.

Before monitoring commenced, our consultants undertook a detailed site walkover to understand the local setting, identify potential dust sources and determine suitable monitoring locations. The findings were then used to develop a monitoring strategy appropriate to the concerns being investigated.

The programme combines Continuous Dust Monitoring with Directional Dust Flux and Dust Deposition Monitoring, allowing both airborne particulate concentrations and deposited material to be assessed over the monitoring period.

Continuous monitoring provides measurements of particulate matter allowing variations in ambient concentrations to be tracked over time.

Directional and depositional sampling provides a different type of evidence, measuring dust moving towards and away from the monitoring location alongside the quantity of material deposited. When considered together, these techniques can provide a more detailed picture of local dust conditions and potential influences.

Looking Beyond How Much Dust Is Present

Understanding the quantity of deposited dust is only one part of a Dust Investigation.

Collected material can also undergo further laboratory analysis, including gravimetric assessment and optical microscopy. Examination of characteristics such as particle colour, morphology, size and composition can help distinguish between different types of deposited material, including mineral particles, fibres, wood fragments and other components.

Combining these results with monitoring location, directional information, meteorological conditions and knowledge of surrounding activities can provide further evidence when investigating potential dust sources.

The approach is particularly useful where concerns relate to dust deposition and loss of amenity, rather than particulate concentrations alone.

Building an Evidence Base Over Time

Following installation, monitoring will continue over an extended period to capture changing operational and meteorological conditions.

Site personnel have also received training to undertake scheduled sampler changeovers between our visits, supported by project-specific instructions and ongoing communication with our monitoring team.

Results are reviewed throughout the programme, with dust deposition reporting completed following each sampling interval. This allows emerging patterns to be considered as the investigation progresses and helps build an evidence base around the dust conditions experienced at the facility.

Rather than relying solely on visual observations or individual dust events, the programme provides objective monitoring data that can be used to better understand the extent, characteristics and potential sources of deposited dust.
